About the Organisation:

As a program of Upper Murray Family Care, the Hume Riverina Community Legal Service is a non-government, community-managed program offering a range of quality services that are responsive to the varying needs of communities extending from the cities of Albury/Wodonga and Wangaratta to townships throughout the Towong, Alpine and Indigo shires, as well as 10 additional LGA's throughout the Southern Riverina of NSW.

We now have an incredibly rewarding opportunity for a skilled Lawyer to join a compassionate team of professionals who are dedicated to supporting those affected by domestic and family violence in disaster affected areas throughout the region.  Join us today to make a real difference in this vibrant regional community, and make Albury/Wodonga your new home.

Your Next Opportunity:

This is a full-time role that will see you providing vital legal services to vulnerable families throughout the region. Your work will build the capacity for strong relationships in the community, particularly within households at risk of experiencing family violence, and those who have been impacted by natural disasters such as bushfires and flooding.

Drawing on a strong network of providers and stakeholders (such as the Centre Against Violence), you will work collaboratively within a supportive team to deliver a holistic suite of services designed to address issues facing families at-risk.

You'll also be provided with training and development opportunities to ensure you feel empowered to provide a thorough and trauma-informed program to our clients every day. This will involve shadowing some of our existing lawyers before being put out in to the field, so you can see first-hand how our team assists vulnerable individuals and families in accessing life-changing services.

As some of your clients will have experienced the impacts of bushfires and flooding, you'll also have the opportunity to travel to parts of Victoria that are recovering from these events.  Explore the impressive Mount Buffalo National Park during your time in Bright, or take a dip in the Kiewa River while you visit at Mount Beauty - there's plenty to see and do in this picturesque region while you're not busy changing lives.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing information, legal advice, referrals and ongoing casework
  • Attending the Magistrates Court of Victoria as required to provide duty lawyer services, and providing both pre and post-court advice and assistance
  • Providing community legal education, secondary consultations and professional development to key stakeholders
  • Undertaking community development and law reform/advocacy
  • Working in a collaborative and holistic way with Centre Against Violence to meet the complex needs of vulnerable clients

To thrive in this role, you'll be a compassionate individual with a warm demeanour and a genuine commitment to supporting those who have been affected by domestic and family violence. You'll have a high-level of emotional intelligence that enables you to engage with vulnerable members of the community in an empathetic manner, and your highly developed communication skills will see you in good stead to disseminate relevant information to stakeholders and clients alike.

As many of our clients have experienced past trauma, highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to provide legal services in an empathetic and trauma-informed manner will be paramount.

An understanding of how natural disasters impact the occurence of domestic and family violence will also be beneficial.

Other requirements include:

  • A satisfactory Victorian and NSW Working with Children Check
  • A satisfactory Police Check
  • Evidence of full COVID-19 Vaccination
  • Current driver’s license

The Benefits:

In addition to an attractive salary ranging from $88,752 - $101,257 (commensurate with skills and experience) pro-rata PLUS superannuation, the successful candidate will receive the opportunity to join a growing organisation making a meaningful impact on the lives of locals.
